Anatomy

Lower Limb

Question 58 of 180

A 53 year old man presents to the ED after falling from a horse onto a fence. Imaging has shown trauma to the contents of the left femoral sheath. Which of the following structures is NOT found in the femoral sheath:

Answer:

The femoral sheath originates as a prolongation of extraperitoneal fascia and encloses the femoral artery, femoral vein and associated lymphatic vessels (contained within the femoral canal). The femoral nerve does NOT lie within the sheath, but instead lies lateral to it.

Femoral Sheath

The femoral sheath originates as a prolongation of extraperitoneal fascia and encloses the femoral artery, femoral vein and femoral canal. The femoral nerve does NOT lie within the sheath, but instead lies lateral to it.

The femoral sheath terminates inferiorly by blending with the adventitia of the femoral vessels approximately 4 cm inferior of the inguinal ligament.
