Anatomy

Upper Limb

Question 170 of 180

Your consultant asks you to examine a patient he has seen. He suspects he may have a traumatic musculocutaneous nerve injury. The musculocutaneous nerve supplies which of the following groups of muscles:

Answer:

The musculocutaneous nerve innervates all the muscles in the anterior compartment of the arm (the coracobrachialis, the biceps brachii and the brachialis muscles).

The musculocutaneous nerve originates from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus, receiving fibres from C5 - C7.

Table: Anatomical Overview of the Musculocutaneous Nerve

Nerve Musculocutaneous
Nerve roots C5 – C7
Plexus cords Lateral
Motor Supply Anterior compartment of arm (coracobrachialis, biceps brachii, brachialis)
Sensory supply Lateral forearm (via the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm)

Function

It innervates all of the muscles in the anterior compartment of the arm (the coracobrachialis, the biceps brachii and the brachialis muscles) and gives rise to the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm, which supplies the skin on the lateral surface of the forearm.
