An action potential travels down tube-shaped invaginations of the sarcolemma called T-tubules (transverse tubules) which penetrate throughout the muscle fibre and lie adjacent to the terminal cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Voltage changes in the T-tubules results in the opening of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ channels and the release of stored Ca2+ into the sarcoplasm. Thus muscle contraction occurs via excitation-contraction coupling.
