The maxillary nerve is the second branch of the trigeminal nerve.

The maxillary nerve originates from the trigeminal ganglia in the cranial cavity and, after passing through the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus, enters the pterygopalatine fossa through the foramen rotundum.
