A 71 year old male patient, known to have prostate cancer, is brought

A 71 year old male patient, known to have prostate cancer, is brought to AED by his carer, as he has not been himself over the last couple of days. He is not eating well and is constantly complaining of thirst. He is lethargic, nauseous and dehydrated. His blood results are shown below:

  • Hb 12 g/dL (M:13 – 18, F:11.5 – 16)
  • WCC 6 x 10^9/L (4 – 11)
  • K+ 4.5 mmol/L (3.5 – 5.3)
  • Na+ 143 mmol/L (135 – 145)
  • Urea 10.2 mmol/L (2.5 – 6.7)
  • Creatinine 160 umol/L (50 – 150)
  • ALP 160 units/L (40 – 120)
  • Albumin 32 g/L
  • Ca2+ 3.52 mmol/l (2.12 – 2.65)
  1. Calculate this patient’s approximate corrected calcium level. (1 mark)
  2. Give two possible complications of hypercalcaemia. (1 mark)
  3. Give two methods by which parathyroid hormone increases serum calcium levels. (1 mark)
